The album comes close to crumpling under its own weight at several points, but just as that seems to happen, guitarists Jimmy Bower and Brian Patton manage to pull out that one more massive doom riff that keeps things afloat. Dopesick is an exhausting, challenging listen, but it is also very arguably Eyehategod's most musically accomplished and well-rounded statement.

Every Eyehategod album shares a few main ingredients in common: the slow, sludgy guitars, the indecipherable ranting of vocalist Michael Williams, the moaning feedback that introduces nearly every song, and the relentlessly bitter, broken-down mood. Take as Needed for Pain has all of that, but it is also the first to really bring out the Southern/blues-rock and Black Sabbath influences in full force. Compared to the rougher In the Name of Suffering, the guitars here are warmer and thicker sounding, while the actual riffs are much more distinguished and in some cases even catchy. There are also moments when they break into a swinging, mid-tempo Southern rock groove, which helps offset the slow pounding that otherwise predominates. Not counting the couple of looped spoken word collages, there isn't a whole lot to distinguish the tracks from one another. By the time it ends, the album just blurs into a big mound of corrosive, swampy doom metal riffage. But they sure do it well, and their conviction is hard to deny.

Eyehategod's first installment of ornery filth remains their most primitive sounding record, which is actually a big part of its appeal. The guitars are coarse and grainy -- a fitting match for frontman Michael Williams' tortured laryngitis screams -- spilling out high-pitched feedback all over the place, while Joey LaCaze's snare drum sounds like a wooden plank being hit by a hammer. There are a few up-tempo hardcore punk sections scattered throughout the album, but for the most part, the songs move at a slow-motion pace reminiscent of the Melvins' early work. You can also make out hints of My War-era Black Flag, Black Sabbath, and Southern rock in general, though the latter two elements are not nearly as noticeable as on later albums. This is not a catchy album, but it's not really meant to be -- the bleak mood and the overall dense, crusty sound are what really dominate. Later Eyehategod albums have more memorable songs, but In the Name of Suffering arguably captures the band's compelling ugliness in its most raw state.

The playing of the core band is even better than before, never mistaking increased skill with needing to show off; the Lombardo/Stevenson rhythm section is in perfect sync, while Navetta provides the corrosive power. Add in Aukerman's in-your-face hilarity and f*ck-off stance, and it's punk rock that wears both its adolescence and brains on its sleeve. Aukerman lets his heart slip through more than once amid all the hilarious descriptions and putdowns, like the slow-burn introduction to "Catalina," with Navetta's guitar the perfect snarling counterpoint. Generally, though, this is smart, sly music and words coming from people interested in creating their own lives and style as opposed to following trends. The music never stops, neither does the energy -- an instant party album of its own kind.

One of the first bands to be labeled emocore, Rites of Spring would seem to transcend all labels as their music cuts right through to the heart of universal human experience. Emotional? Yes -- check out the bitter memorial relived on "For Want Of," the pulse pounding moment-grab that is "Drink Deep," or the devoted searches for honesty and meaning explored on "End on End," "Theme," and really just about every track on the disc. Hardcore? Yes -- emerging from the D.C. scene, the music is pure focused energy, not a single note wasted. The band at times is fast and furious, at other times lush and evocative though always with a sense of drive and melody. Rites of Spring hint at some of the territory vocalist/guitarist Guy Picciotto and drummer Brendan Canty would later survey with Fugazi, but this band is much more than just a stepping stone. End on End, quite simply, is a testament to the rich possibilities of sincerity in music.

Nothing if not emotionally devastating, Willpower's warmth and accessible breadth proved the perfect complement to Supernova's calculated coldness and musical mysticism. Changes in mood are echoed by sea changes in volume and dynamics, Austin's high-pitched scream yielding to a breathy, near-silent spoken whisper in the space of a few measures. Though its time signatures are still tricky in a mathematical way, Willpower's greatest strength is its appeal to the human heart through whatever means necessary. Opening with a particularly telling audio sample, Today Is the Day's sophomore effort is the sound of man's struggle to keep it together despite all odds. This album is as beautiful and striking as it is painful and charged with darkness.

Back in 1981, Negative Approach were one of the dominant forces in the Detroit underground. The ravages of the Motor City made it a perfect breeding ground for this cacophony, later termed “hardcore.” Hordes of punks packed the legendary Freezer Theatre to John Brannon’s jagged, gruff vocals, the McCulloch brothers’ (Rob and Graham) guitar/bass gnash, and OP Moore’s pounding fury. Long out of print, NA originally released this 10-Song 7” EP in 1982 to a limited pressing of 3000 on Touch and Go Records. The band’s minimalist (read: 30 second songs) and aggressive brand of punk has inspired countless hardcore bands around the globe. Their influence continues today with the 2010 publications of Tesco Vee’s Touch and Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ‘77-’83 and of Tony Rettman’s Why Be Something You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore 1979-1985 — which both feature NA’s John Brannon on their covers. Having disbanded in 1985, Negative Approach reunited in 2006 for Touch and Go’s 25th Anniversary and have been playing shows and touring ever since. Now remastered by John Golden, the legendary 10-Song 7” EP is once again available for past, present, and future hardcore fans.

End of a Year started as a way to kill time for Albany musicians already involved in full-time bands. Having spent time playing "heavier" music, the initial End of a Year line-up was interested in trying something more overtly melodic.
After releasing a number of releases End of a Year caught the attention of Revelation Records, and in 2006 they released the "Sincerely" album on that label. Since the release of "Sincerely", End of a Year have released a number of 7"EPs and split 7"EPs on various labels worldwide.
Their latest release is a fantastic 7"EP recorded by End of a Year guitarist Andrew Duggan. Picking up where previous releases left off, the hook laden opener "Robert E. Howard" explodes with a discordant crash and bang. A fitting sonic backdrop to vocalist Patrick Kindlon's uniquely honest and poetic diatribe. This theme carries into the other two songs on the release "Gray Morrow" and "Walter Miller Jr". Collectively all three songs carry an organic ebb and flow that brings to mind the ghost of Rites Of Spring as well as other influential Revolution Summer-era DC bands.

This is an album that displays emtion in each of its song. Unlike many of todays artist who pose for certain look or stlye, Joy Division were about channeling their emotions through their music. Unknown Pleasures, a landmark album the world was not ready for its time of release and yet still an album that sounds fresh and not dated. From the opening track Disorder to the track I Rememeber Nothing, the album is a sonic venture unlike the world has seen. She's Lost Control alone a track that makes you feel like you are on the edge of losing control. Seeing footage of Ian Curtis perform SLC is simply shocking. As the beat of the Stephen Morris drums fuel the gyrations of what seems to be an Ian Curtis in a state of epilepsy, one can wonder how Ian didnt lose control there and then. Whereas the power of Shadowplay can be summoned up in one lyric "In the Shadowplay acting out your own death.." Unknown Pleasures offers us a view into Joy Divisions world. A dystopia in shades of grey.

Witchcult Today is exactly what the album says it is. This is the present view of stoner doom and Electric Wizard are the current kings (and queen) of this minor genre. It's hard to find a better sound than this, production or otherwise. While I won't write it down as a genius release, its certainly probably the best stoner doom album to come out in no less than 5 years. Highly recommended.
