The definative Electric Wizard release, Dopethrone, can be enjoyed simply for its crushing noise and groove. The riffs are great- could be enjoyed outside of the context of hypnotic doom. The production is buzzing and overloaded, but the notes are clear. All 8 of these songs just ROCK. The occasionally ambience (usually created by a guitar) comes in at times to improve the psychedelia. High end minimalist solos are also occasionally present. Electric Wizard are masters of creating feel by using a minimalist set of notes and just letting them reverberate into your skull, each chord punctuated and powerful. The guitar tone is perfect, unimaginably thick. My favorites on here are "Funeralopolis" for its brilliant main riff, "Barbarian" for its droning power, and "I, The Witchfinder" for the extending jam that builds and builds in its intensity. "Weird Tales" is also great for its dark, hot atmosphere. This recording almost sounds live in its energy and power.
